Fourth Straight Viper Win for Pollard
Mark Chisum, Z3 Sports June 18, 2009
KINSTON, AL -- The Bubba Pollard Benefit Series continued Saturday night at South Alabama Speedway. The series, formally called the Viper Series, has had four races this year. Pollard has left town with the winner’s trophy each time. Pollard had to work a little for his latest win, the Canebrake 100. He didn’t have the fastest car in qualifying , or even the fastest car in the race. But he stayed clean all race and was around at the end. And when the checkers fell, he was out front, again.
John Bolen turned the fastest lap in qualifying, touring the oval in 15.498 seconds. Inversion put Augie Grill on the pole with Chase Elliott, son of racing legend Bill Elliott on the outside. When the green fell, the front of the field stayed in formation for several laps. Elliott, on the outside, was able to keep even with Grill, even leading lap four, before Grill was finally able to clear Elliott on lap seven and then pulled out to a three car length lead. Elliott settled in behind Grill, followed by Pollard, Bolen, and DJ VanderLey.
With Grill maintaining his lead, the racing behind him kept the fans entertained. Pollard was trying to get around Elliott while Bolen and VanderLey were going at each other. Taylor Satterfield was able to work his way past Bolen and VanderLey to move into fourth on lap 41. At the halfway point, Grill led Elliott, Pollard, Satterfield, and Bolen.
The Bolen-VanderLey battle came the caution on lap 59 when contact sent the two spinning. Grill pulled away again after the restart and it appeared the Birmingham driver was heading to another South Alabama win. However that changed on lap 87 when Grill’s engine let go as he crossed the start/finish line.
With Grill out of the way, Elliott regained the lead. The 13-year old’s lead was short-lived , however, as Pollard dove to the inside on lap 89 to take the lead. Elliott was able to stay close, but Satterfield was on his bumper and made his way into second with seven laps to go. Satterfield chased Pollard the remaining laps but couldn’t overcome Pollard’s advantage. Pollard led Satterfield across the stripe by .142 seconds to take the win. Elliott finished an impressive third in his first start at SAS. Bolen and VanderLey worked their way through the field to finish fourth and fifth.
In the Modified Feature, Heath Mills took the lead from the start and led all 35 laps to take the win. Mills eased away from the field in the early going, only to have his lead erased by several cautions. The yellows allowed Kevin Peel and Ryan Redmon, who had worked their way from the back of the pack, to close to Mills’ bumper. Peel and Redmon chased Mills for half of the race, but couldn’t close enough to challenge for the top spot. Mills led Peel to the checkers, followed by Redmon, Lance Blacker, and Mike Daniels.
Jason Singletary won his third straight Roadrunner Feature. Starting seventh, Singletary quickly made his way through the field, moving into second by lap four. He then hooked up with Tim Peters for a great battle for the top spot. Peters, who had led from the start was able to keep Singletary behind him for several laps. Singletary tried inside and outside, but Peters halted his advancement each time. Finally, with five laps to go, as the frontrunners headed down the front stretch, Singletary went to the outside, then quickly dove back to the bottom and got the inside position on Peters. Singletary completed the pass coming out of turn two and sped away for the win. Peters followed Singletary home. LaDunn Stokes and Mike Wolfe crossed the line third and fourth. Ricky Strickland followed in fifth. However, the final rundown was not set until after post race inspection. Stokes and Wolfe both failed inspection and were disqualified. Strickland was moved to third with Billy Maxie and Chris Yeakos credited with fourth and fifth.
In the Coyote Feature, Travis Slawson took the lead from the pole and led all 20 laps to take the win. Lee Rogers couldn’t keep Slawson’s pace and settled for second. Max Nelson came from the seventh starting spot to finish third. Danny Thompkins and Rusty Locklar rounded out the top five.
Next Saturday, June 20, South Alabama Speedway will have a full schedule of local racing with heats and features scheduled for Modified, Street Stock, Roadrunner, Coyote, and CupLite classes.
